Foliage

From a story about fall foliage, with design help from Shane Dunlap (who said the center should be aligned better so I'm mentioning that as a disclaimer).

This photo is not staged

Came across this couple at a live music festival. Married 40 years and still like each other. They laughed and laughed but I was impressed.

Backroads

Sometimes you troll the backroads and you don't find anything publishable for the paper but you do find a goat eating leaves on its hind legs.

Heat

A feature I grabbed while at a sports assignment today. Sometimes it's hard to be on this side of the lens, although it has really cooled down in the last 24 hours.

Crowning the Apple Queen

Scenes from Biglerville's annual Apple Festival: Outgoing Apple Queen Brooke Eastman shares a quiet moment with her dad before heading to the pageant's stage; a contestant waits in the wings; the crown carrier waits to get the show on the road (actually, his dad said he yawns when he gets nervous).

Tina Barney

This is my attempt at an homage to Tina Barney-- the Central PA version. Outtakes from a story; the kids had known each other a long time and played in each other's backyards. I liked that certain ease.

Trike-a-thon

Teacher Donna Adams (steering) and Sister Anne Leonard take a spin around the parking lot for fun during the Trike-a-thon benefit at St. Joseph's Academy.

The Old Folks

A little boy checks out the masks of the dancers scheduled to perform on Kids' Day, a day where children are honored in Mexico. The dance was called "Los Viejitos" or "The Old Folks."

Tavern Closing

Wow, where did April go? Did not mean to go a whole month without blogging. Here are two pics from a story about a local tavern losing its liquor license, so regulars came for a wake of sorts in its final hours. We used to go there, too--guess I will have to order my Vegas Showgirl elsewhere (energy drink + vodka?). It was tasty, whatever was in it, kind of looked like what you put in hummingbird feeders.

Quad Squad

This image was from a story about a woman who is expecting quadruplets after many tries and disappointments in trying to get pregnant, both before and after conceiving the daughter pictured here ("Quad Squad" is her term, by the way).

Natural portrait light

This is from a story about a local woman (thanks to The Onion, I can't say "area woman" with a straight face) who helps those who have lost homes due to natural disasters. I loved the natural light of her house.

Barbershop

Top: Barry Yingling hangs out at Doug's Barbershop on the last day of 2011. Stumbled on this feature on the way to make a building mug which happened to be next door. The John Deere clock and the vintage Coke machine were killing me with their color and general awesomeness.

Bottom: Girl Scouts compete in a cookie balancing contest.
